Choosing Bedding for Cribs Part 1 - Safety Issues

When you first find yourself pregnant, I bet there will be plenty of people offering you their treasured nursery furniture and crib bedding. Even though we belong to a 'throwaway' society, throwing away things we no longer need, there is something about baby goods that makes us want to hold on to them. Perhaps we want to share our happy memories with others starting families.

There is something very special about the baby's first bed, whether it is a moses basket, a crib (cot or cradle in the US) or a cot (US - crib). I know I spent many hours when I was pregnant, re-lining and making drapes for a cradle that had been in my family for several generations. It also gave me a chance to check whether it would be safe.

The cradle was made of wicker, so I made sure that there were no broken or loose bits of wood and that the joints were all tight. I bought a new firm mattress too, as the old one did not look too hygienic! For my cradle, a pram mattress provided the best fit. When fitting the drapes I also made sure that there were no loose threads or pieces of material that the baby might get hold of. Although newborn babies can't move themselves about much, they can grab hold of anything within reach and put it in their mouths.

Most organisations concerned with baby furniture safety, such as the Juvenile Products Manufacturer's Association in the USA and British Standards in the UK say that it is best to buy new if you can. Those products that display either the JPMA seal of approval or the BS 'Kite' mark, have been tested very thoroughly and meet all the safety requirements. There are some checks you can do on cribs that have been 'handed down' too, to make sure that your baby will be safe and happy. After all the crib is the one place where your baby will spend time on their own, out of your sight.

Important things to look at to make sure the crib and bedding are okay for your baby:
  1. Make sure there is no chipped or loose paint.
  2. The space between the bars should be no more than 2 3/8 inches (approximately the size of a drinks can) to prevent baby's head from getting between them.
  3. There are no cut out shapes in the head or foot. There shouldn't be any posts that baby could catch their clothes on.
  4. Check that the joints are firm. The crib should not wobble.
  5. Check the mechanism for raising and lowering the side rail can be managed with one hand and that it is fully secure when raised.
  6. The top of the side rail is at least 22 inches above the mattress.
  7. Check the mattress is firm and clean. This is one piece of the crib that it may be best to replace. Buy a mattress that fits inside the crib snugly.
  8. Make sure any bedding conforms to fire safety regulations.
  9. When fitting bumpers make sure strings are hidden and secure.
  10. Bedding for cribs: Never use quilts, duvets, sheepskin or pillows for babies under 12 months as they are at risk of overheating. A room thermometer will ensure the temperature in the room is right. A combination of sheets and blankets is best.
  11. Never place the crib next to lamps, cords, window blinds/curtains, or furniture that might invite climbing.

Why Baby's Crib Bedding Should Be Carefully Chosen
Pink with ruffles and lace, blue with puppy dogs and teddy bears; it's for a girl, it's for a boy; but wait! Baby's bedding should be carefully chosen with more in mind than a crib's fashion statement.

Crib Bedding - Beware When Purchasing Online
Be wary when purchasing crib bedding online. You may unknowingly pay in advance, wait weeks for your crib bedding to arrive, and be subject to large fees if you must cancel or return your order.

Crib Bedding, Round Crib Bedding
While regular rectangular cribs are more common a round crib certainly stands out from the pack An attractive option if you have plenty of space in the nursery a round crib can give the room a distinctive look Round cribs include a padded bumper a crib sheet comforter quilt and a dust ruffle The advantages of a round crib besides the fact that it definitely looks different is that it has no corners
